Sad days like Sunday.

I had a couple of days with the boys this weekend. While I love spending time with them the saddest part is saying goodbye. This happens every Sunday night after they leave. I’m overwhelm by the realization that I won’t see them for another fortnight. This weekend is different though. I may not see them for a bit longer. I tried to make this weekend a bit more special. We went for a warm hike along the river near St. Jacobs. Found a couple of geocaches and just tried to bond. I gave them a couple of leather jackets from my youth that they will grow in to. They loved trying them on and wore them home.

The last weekend they were here we did something extremely dangerous, but a male rite of passage. Driving the car the last block to the driveway. While sitting in my lap I controlled the accelerator and brake and they controlled the steering wheel. This was a memorable highlight of their weekend and they ask every time we approach home now “can I drive the last corner?”. While this seems dangerous in our bubble-wrap-helmut-wearing-over-protective society I had my hand on the gear selector at all times to be ready to throw it in neutral at the first sign of trouble. Remember, in 4 years they will be behind the wheel without my oversight.

Micro Chores

Every day and every week we all have various chores to complete. Sometimes they are routine and have been carried out for years, if not a lifetime. Brushing your teeth and general hygiene can be done with little thought and in fact can provide a relaxing break to the stress filled chores that can clog our calendar. They take more than 2 minutes to complete but are required to be performed frequently. Some are weekly chores such as taking the garbage out or mowing the (Lawn) weeds.)

A new chore has cropped up in the past few years that requires little effort, or time, to complete but requires more innovative thoughts. The Status update. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Woof and other social media require the user to think up something clever or semi-important and compose a well crafted message with limited character counts. The Micro Chore exists only because we want to know what important or mundane thoughts are running through your head. The reader gets a little insight into your mind and after some time can learn what make you tick. Are you watching the game? Thinking about dinner? Just completed a 26 mile marathon? We need to know about that and you need to pause and compose a micro paragraph about your experience. I have taken up and dropped my Twitter habit just because the breadth is wide but the depth is shallow. Let’s try and live a micro chore free week. See if you can do it.

WordPress on my iPhone

I recently downloaded and installed the iPhone WordPress app. Writing this post on my iPhone is handy yet not easy. So the entries will have to be short and sweet. I can see using this application while on the road for progress reports.

My Desk (State of the Union)

I know the sign of a cluttered mind is a cluttered desk. I also have heard the sign of an empty mind is an empty desk. I live in the land between those two idioms. Trying to remove items as they land chronologically on the top of most flat surfaces in the house. The time between Christmas and new year seems to provide an opportunity to clean up, file, store, toss and generally get better organized. I remind my self that that Mac|Life magazine from July 2007 will not read itself nor will it have any valuable information so tossing would be the best course of action. It is about this time of year I remind myself of the 4 four “D”s.

Delay

Do it Now!

Every item can fall into one of those four categories. Unfortunately Delay is the biggest pile when Destroy should be my first line of defence. Do it now could also be utilized more effectively. So here I go. Into the new year. I’ll keep you posted.

Outbreak of “Hype-Hysteriosis”

It seems the long lines to get a needle to prevent the spread of H1N1 has wrought an equally deadly outbreak. Hype-Hysteriosis is a condition that spreads when lack of information and fear grip a community. Reality is put to the side and the imagined risk of catching a deadly disease takes the place of real dangers. In all probability more Canadians will die because they do not have snow tires on their car than from H1N1. The simple solution of switching to a more suitable tire for Canadian Winter driving will save more lives than the H1N1 shot. If the tires are mandated here in Ontario, as they are in other provinces, then Ontarians will be safer when they venture out in unfavorable driving conditions.

I think flu shots are important, however when asked if I would wait 6 hours in a line outside in cold weather to get one then I will take a pass until the effort is less painful. Some might argue that asking the weak to wait in less than ideal environment is causing real sickness to develop. Some people will likely catch a cold and some may even perish from complications. It will not be reported that the line up caused the death but I suspect that will be a contributing factor.

I will get the shot but don’t make me wait.
